After the DCMS Committee summoned a number of witnesses to assist them in their inquiry into Fake News, those who had campaigned for Britain to leave the EU let it be known that they were of less than perfect courage. First came the petulant refusal to appear from Vote Leave’s Dominic Cummings, formerly chief polecat to Michael “Oiky” Gove at the Department for Education. And then came Leave EU.
Dominic Cummings - Walter Mitty #1
Cummings had declared that he would not appear before Damian Collins’ committee, and had even let the perpetually thirsty Paul Staines and his rabble at the Guido Fawkes blog know that he was considering appearing in the Commons’ public gallery when his absence was being debated in the chamber, so he could make a protest and thereby hijack proceedings. He did not turn up. Because he’s a coward.
The thought that the Serjeant at Arms has the power of arrest within the precincts of the Palace of Westminster might also have entered the Cummings cranium. But Arron Banks and Andy Wigmore of Leave EU were still going to turn up. Except now they aren’t.
Instead, Banksy and Wiggy have told Collins “You will be aware that a group called ‘Fair Vote Project’ have launched a legal action in Mississippi (USA) claiming that data was sent to the University of Mississippi and used in the Leave.EU referendum campaign … The Fair Vote Project have used ‘allegations’ provided to the DCMS committee from a number of witnesses as evidence”. Do go on.
“The DCMS committee also released evidence early from a witness, a few days before the hearing in order to aid this group. The Fair Vote Project publicly thanked the committee for their help! We believe the actions of the committee amount to collusion with a Pro EU campaign group in order to create ‘Fake News’”. Then it all became farcical.
Banksy takes his batsy home and thereby drops himself and Wiggy in the poosy
“We will be reporting yourself and the people involved to the appropriate House of Common authority for colluding with the Fair Vote Project & investigating whether the ‘Parliamentary privilege’ you enjoy might be revoked as a result”. Yeah, right. Banksy and Wiggy can have Parliamentary privilege declared null and void on their say-so. Er, no.
It got worse: “It is perfectly clear that the committee, which comprises only of Remain supporting MPs is conducting a co-ordinated ‘Witch Hunt’ of Leave groups … I am writing to inform you that Andy Wigmore and myself will not be appearing before the committee on the 12th June and will not appear until this matter is resolved”.
Just like Cummings, Banks and Wigmore told the electorate they were all about Parliament “taking back control”, and making Parliamentary sovereignty supreme. And just like Cummings, when that Parliamentary sovereignty was inconvenient to them, they just decided to treat it with contempt, covering their tracks with a fog of excuses.
Dominic Cummings, Arron Banks and Andy Wigmore are cowards who should hang their heads in shame. They don’t give a damn about Parliamentary sovereignty. For them, the referendum was just a game and they don’t give a stuff about what happens now.
Sadly, their attempts to shut out reality only serve to make them all look so much more ridiculous. And Leave voters now know exactly who it is who screwed them over.
Where does UKIP keep its money?
In the Wiggy Bank of course!
