The Mail And Lucy Letby

The inmates of the Northcliffe House bunker have a new obsession, and for reasons that may not be immediately obvious. Today, a former nurse called Lucy Letby is to be sentenced, after being found guilty of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill another six. She had previously worked on the neonatal unit of the Countess of Chester hospital.

As the BBC reported after all the verdicts had been delivered, “Letby deliberately injected babies with air, force fed others milk and poisoned two of the infants with insulin. She refused to appear in the dock for the latest verdicts. They have been delivered by the jury over several hearings but they were not reportable until jurors were discharged”. There was more.

The trial lasted for more than 10 months and it is believed to be the longest murder trial in the UK”. However, “Letby will be sentenced at Manchester Crown Court on Monday. She has indicated - via her legal team - that she does not want to attend her sentencing hearing or follow proceedings via a videolink from prison”. And so the Mail moved its obsession into higher gear.

Today’s front page thundered “MAKE COWARD LETBY FACE US! Demand from victims’ families as killer nurse set to hide in cell”. The Dacre doggies are clearly especially aggrieved not merely at Ms Letby’s actions, but more pointedly at her decision not to face the music like a good gel.

And here we get an inkling as to why the Mail is even more full of righteousness than usual: Lucy Letby has let the side down. The side consisting of the Mail’s kind of people. A recent article about her (there have, it is true, been scores to choose from) hints at the Mail’s problem, telling “How did Lucy Letby become a baby murderer? The church-going 'vanilla killer' who holidayed with her parents and slept surrounded by teddy bears was nicknamed the 'Innocent One' by friends”. Ah yes, “church-going”.

A characterisation that screams OH WHAT A GIVEAWAY. The Mail’s kind of people are not only overwhelmingly white, they are “church-going”. They are Christians. And Christians, especially displaying the veneer of being practising Christians, are the sole religious group acceptable to the Mail by default. Judaism? Well, maybe, if not too lefty. Islam? Forget it.

Why the f*** do I keep appearing in these posts, c***?!?!?

And the Mail underscores this later in the article: “Described as straight-laced, Letby attended the evangelical Hope City Church and had a close circle of 'churchy' friends - five girls who self-styled themselves the 'Miss-Matches' while studying for their A-levels at Hereford Sixth Form College”. Churchy.

On the Mail goes: “Neighbours remember Letby as a 'sweet' girl, who was a 'delight' for her parents. They were so proud when she attained her honours degree they marked her graduation, in December 2011, with an announcement in their local paper, the Hereford Times”. Do go on.

Like the serial killer Harold Shipman two decades before her, Lucy Letby is a narcissist … Prosecutors are convinced that Letby felt 'excited' by the pain she caused and the way she was able to manipulate the unwitting players – adults and babies alike - in her sinister, depraved drama”. But enough.

What the Mail is telling us is that, yes, Lucy Letby has let the good white Christian side down. Far preferable for the legendarily foul mouthed Paul Dacre and his cowering acolytes that those committing such heinous crimes come from groups that are not the Mail’s kind of people. The Mail cannot, today, nudge and wink that it’s one of those the paper has “othered”.

And that is why they are especially righteous about Ms Letby declining to leave her cell and come to court. The iron rule that the Mail just made up is that those on the good white Christian side should, if found guilty of serious crimes, stand before the judge, accept the sentence handed down, and hear the victims’ statements. Because that’s what good white Christians do.

Plus it beats doing actual journalism. So quite normal for the Mail, then.

But manufacturing crackbrained far right propaganda from a hideous murder tragedy is par for the Daily Heil course: "Hoorah for the black shirts" and all that. Prolefeed for suburban mortgaged-to-the-hilt Gammon mugs and Alf Garnetts.

A whole life term means sanctions for contempt of court are sadly non existent.

She would have full control of the court and be centre of attention to gain even more notoriety.

The victims families would have to sit there whilst she potentially stood there laughing in their faces or hear her whistle a merry tune or sing happy birthday or protest her innocence in.

It would be sick, but the Mail would want it for more headlines about the ‘performance’.

Mail readers are not, by and large, churchgoers. Far too much effort, the vicar may say something that leaves them a bit uncomfortable, and besides, Sundays are for B&Q. However, just as with Shakespeare, the Last Night of the Proms, the National Trust and a zillion and one other things, they have a *very* good idea of how it should be.

Their religion is best defined as "Well, at least I'm not _______". A little social edge to consider themselves superior to others. In many respects similar to the "prosperity gospel" popular across the USA's Bible Belt. Lots of judging others, not so much good works and turning the other cheek.

You don't mention the other weird religious references in the Mail's coverage, Tim, according to which Manichaeistic dualism* is alive and well and surrounds us all, yea even unto the world outside the M25.

In illustration of this, Saturday's front page picture of Letby was captioned 'The Eyes of Evil'.

Not to be outdone, the 'inimitable' Sarah Vine sank to the occasion on the front page of the Mail on the Sabbath yesterday with her 'verdict on Lucy Letby' Sarah's verdict, above the picture of Letby and her evil eyes?:

'PROOF THE DEVIL IS AMONG US'

(Proof in Ms Vine's case (delivered twice weekly) being between 40 and 55, I imagine)

I apologise to some readers for the odd long word but the Tourette's has been playing me up something rotten of late.

Rather like the US evangelicals who now believe that Jesus is too woke:

Actually, I think what has happened here is the result of Mail hacks being illiterate ("straight laced", indeed). They thought her name was Lucy Lefty, and so the Pavlovian response kicked in.

Should be thankful that demented fascist rag hasn't used the horror to attack the NHS.

Yet.

I recall the BBC reporting on a murder a few years back in which they noted that the victim was “a regular churchgoer”. As if it were somehow less painful to be violently murdered utterly to ᴅᴇᴛʜ if you don’t take time to go and visit your imaginary friend at least once a week.

Dacre's weird obsession with Letby's eyes continues today with the same police mugshot cropped to show just the eyes. This time they are not 'the eyes of evil' or proof that the devil is among us, but a demonstration of her 'cold pitiless stare'.

As she is obviously looking at the police cameraman/woman shortly after her arrest, even the Mail could hardly expect Letby to be cheerfully conveying her acknowledgement that the game is up and it's a fair cop.

Is Dacre a little besotted I wonder? After all, Hindley used to get fan mail.
I wonder what Sarah Vine thinks.

To be perfectly honest, I don’t think this is a story for political point scoring

Indeed, the Letby obsession continues. In a moment of self-parody, today's Daily Heil webshite had as it's lead article and "Exclusive" - " 'I bought Lucy Letby's home': Man reveals he bought £200,000 semi-detached property where nurse lived... " Even then, it took two hacks to almost make a story out of it.

The Lucia DeBerk case in Holland is eerily similar.

Slide Guy

Isn't it the ultimate Mail story, though?

NHS problems, evil woman member of recently striking workforce, murder, the devil walking among us...... and house prices!

Only thing missing is any mention of Letby 'flaunting her toned abs'.

It's a little beneath you to talk about her eyes like that Bertie. I don't think this is the time for dark humour.

I've written extensively on issues around WW2. In my fiction, I try and keep the humour light and very sporadic. It works best.

Your obtuseness knows no bounds, Mark.

Tim's original post and my (and others') comments since are concerned not with 'her eyes' but with the sort of crass, seedy ,cheap journalism that this country seems to have to put up with.

'Her eyes' and the Mail's use of the image are a bloody good example of what we're talking about. Lost on you it appears.

I used to assume that your comments were a kind of faux-naif irony. But they appear to be genuine. You consistently and over a long period miss the point entirely. That wouldn't be so bad if your posts weren't larded with pompous and snidey personal comments (and reminders of what you say you've achieved) .

What I find impossible to understand is how (and I confess I know nothing of your work except what you have regularly reminded us you have done), you have been able to produce anything of merit when you seem to lack any kind of ability to discern meaning, mood, tone, intent or nuance in the written language of others.

Those are just my good points Bertie.

In all seriousness, I'll dig out a dvd or two to send you of some of my TV stuff. The next play won't be for a while, hopefully some Liverpool FC related stuff will come first, but I hope you can see it.

I consider my harshest critics to be the best ones for a play. Particularly those without degrees because they see it how it should be, rather than how it compares you see

I mean no harshness, just thought the eyes comment was a little crass, reminded me of a eugenics nut.

Burlington Bertie from Bow said...

Please don't bother, Mark.

No, I don't 'see'. And what is your continuing snark about degrees all about?

Do you not have any? Do you think I don't have any? Is this some secret little area of snobbery of yours? Yes, I have two degrees. Does that matter?

The 'eyes comment' was indeed crass. It was the comment of the Daily Mail and the crassness is precisely what we were commenting on. And you still don't seem to understand the distinction.

Anonymous... and I have our 'lively debates', frequently heated and venomous, but usually on the basis of some actual point. I don't recall ever reading anything substantive from you on here, only snarky ad hominem claims (admissions?) that you haven't understood my comments and obsessional nonsense about degrees.

I'd be grateful if you would spare me your attentions from now on. Thank you.

Fraternal greetings

Bertie

Pervy Mail fascination with female killers continues today: front page has a LETBY EXCLUSIVE pic they've sniffed out of Letby in school uniform.

'Schoolgirl who grew up to be a baby murderer' is the tasteful legend.

(The Daily Star, a much better class of paper, has the mugshot of come-and-get-me-if-you-thnk-you're-hard-enough ham actor Trump with the headline DONALD GRUMP. Excellent)
