Labour Chaos - Don’t Be Distracted

A Government that had, no more than a year ago, been returned to power with 411 MPs, has this week been exposed as a clueless shambles, with its leader clearly not in control of his Parliamentary troops, and despite its main opposition, the Tories, showing that they are, in every political department, yet worse. But our free and fearless press has failed to identify the cause.

Morgan McSweeney - out of excuses

Their attention was seized by Rachel Reeves, the under-fire Chancellor of the Exchequer, appearing tearful and upset in the Commons yesterday. All the otherwise unemployable talking heads instantly knew more about this than anyone else, including Ms Reeves. But they still failed to nail the culprit.

It wasn’t about Ms Reeves, although she has been made the scapegoat for so long that it has clearly had a deleterious effect on her. The leader of this particular incarnation of Team Shambles is Keir Starmer, for whom former BBC man Jon Sopel had especially harsh words: “The political ineptitude and mismanagement of this is epic. The whips office, the Downing St operation, and DWP should be hanging heads in shame. And truly disastrous for Keir Starmer and what’s left of his authority”. Or was it really Keir Starmer?

The question has to be put, as Patrick Maguire of the Murdoch Times was a little nearer the target. “Keir Starmer told cabinet this morning that briefings against Morgan McSweeney must stop … PM said McSweeney had his full support and he ‘will not countenance’ criticism of him … Warned ministers: ‘We will not turn on our staff’ … Said Labour wouldn’t have won without McSweeney”. And a last sentence that identifies who really wrote that.

Labour “wouldn’t have won without McSweeney”? Without the heroic presence of the rank coward who won’t come forward and front up for his failings? The Big Man (ho ho ho) who, by the admission of his “friends”, worked to throw the 2019 General Election? Yeah, right.

The alleged political titan who made Labour so electable that 560,000 fewer voters put their cross next to the candidate representing The Red Team? And now the presence behind Starmer’s warning not to go after him. The problem for McSweeney and his cabal of nonentities is that they have been rumbled.

Abdi Duale - maybe change the background colour next time

Labour won as the Tory vote imploded, Reform UK split what was left, and turnout dropped to an abysmal 59.7%. There was no four dimensional chess on offer, just plain and shameless opportunism. Also, Labour’s poll numbers showed a worrying downturn in the last days of the campaign. What support remains is now being sprayed up the wall on a series of unpopular measures.

Whoever is in 11 Downing Street appears to be forbidden to ask the well off to pay a little more in tax. Is that Ms Reeves’ own choice, or is the McSweeney cabal behind that, too? Is that cabal behind all the threats of deselection made towards MPs who express a little more empathy towards the poor and vulnerable? We had a mere hint on that score yesterday.

McSweeney’s pal Abdi Duale, one of the “we won and the lefties lost tee hee hee” brigade, declared apropos something said in the Commons “This should be a cause for expulsion, no excuses”. Since when did he make the rules? Doesn’t New New Labour bother with due process any more?

This is, let us not forget, the crowd who loved to taunt Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership team with the claim that any other leader would be 20 points ahead in the polls. Even being one point ahead of Reform UK and its self-appointed Oberscheissenführer Nigel “Thirsty” Farage is, right now, something Starmer and his team can only dream of. And that, despite the stream of excuses from The Great Man, is directly down to McSweeney.

Writer and campaigner Francesca Martinez put it directly: “It's laughable how hard Labour are trying to avoid taxing the super rich … During Covid, it's estimated that the UK's richest increased their wealth by £890 billion … A tax of 0.6% would raise billions – and not push anyone into poverty … So does Labour now represent the super rich?”. Maybe that should be “Blue Labour”.

Whether “Blue” or “New New”, this incarnation of the cabal behind Labour has come to the end of its road. But won’t admit it. Or go with good grace.

I told you so.

I know politicians and staffers aren't known for their ability to sense irony, but that comment was surely taking the piss? All the major party's (not including Reform as it's a business not a party) have the same rule - 'if a member (inc MPs) is found to acting against the party they are liable for automatic dismissal and a permanent ban'. To date, none of Mcsweeneys crowd who cost the party, and the nation, two elections, have been dismissed despite being caught red handed doing exactly that.

Great blog! Nice to hear from you.

Well of COURSE it was the responsibility of the far right metrognome Starmer Quisling.

Far right McGobshite might have tabled the scheme, but the Quisling signed it off. As did the other cabinet Quislings.

Reeves? A self-pitying bought-and-paid-for far right shithouse. Pffffttt.......

Meanwhile, tremendous totalitarian advances in the USA. Doubtless to a chorus of yapping approval from "Labour" chihuahuas.

Careful what you say, Tim.
By next Friday c,riticism of McSweeney, Starmer, Reeves or Cooper could find you liable under the Terrorism Act 2000 for 'behaviour becoming more aggressive ....demonstrating a willingness to use violence'. And punishable by up to 14 years imprisonment.

Don't mess with them, Tim, you'll get us all proscribed.

As Trump moves ever closer to outright totalitarian govt, with actions that would've given Il Duce pause for thought, it does give us all plenty of opportunity for mockery - of those who claimed it would never happen.

Piers Moron for example, who mocked US students during a podcast, telling them how 'stupid' they were even to suggest it.

Now, as anyone who opposes Trump is declared "an enemy of the state", ICE behaves in a way that surviving SA members look fondly upon, and his party resembles that of the NFP, where 'democracy' became a pose, we can all have an ironic, sadness tinged, belly laugh at their ignorance and naivety.

Exactly. An 83 year old faces up to 14 years in prison for holding up a sign supporting Palestine action. Democracy and freedom of speech at its finest. Oddly, frog face, Tommo and the right wing press have gone silent over 'two tier' Kier, and freeze peach...

Where's the beef?

These far right policies are precisely as dictated by warmongering international capitalism.

What else do you expect from a far right metrognome Zionist-without-qualification? A ceasefire?

All "centrists" (read: cowards) are required to take their wormwood on time, sit quietly, and await the next dose. All as prescribed by Rupert Murdoch, "Lord" Rothermere, "Lord" Ali and Mister Micawber.

Get used to it. It's the future that doesn't work - except for genocidal mass murder and wars. Perpetual war for perpetual peace.

What could POSSIBLY go wrong?

Tremendous news for all ranting eighties!

The Quisling "Labour" government might, just might, tax the basic state pension. Thus ensuring additional pensioner deaths to add to the 3,000 hypothermia deaths last winter. Gotta keep up that body count.

Meanwhile, Britain's itinerant mound of suppurating blubber (aka Quisling Lammy) has been busy in Damascus praising a terrorist with a $10 million bounty on his head. Thus following Langley and Pentagon orders to the letter.

Happy days, treble Quislings all round!

Poly pocket at it again. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/jul/08/labour-best-start-britain-children That great standby of Blairite apologists, Sure Start is being temporarily (the Reform/Tory coalition will scrap it again) revived. A good idea, indeed perhaps New Labours 'only' good idea, but as the govt is getting ready to slash support for SEN children, a classic case of give with one hand, and take back twice over with the other.

'Overt' fascism? But you told us that we were already living under 'outright' fascism last summer. Is 'overt' fascism fascister than 'outright' or is it a more benign version? I'm confused.

And the 'Starmer trail' mentioned in your link. Is this a London tourist board initiative, some kind of guided Islington walking route on which Centrist tourists will be regaled with interesting facts and fascinating insights into Starmer's life and times and entertained with flawless quotes from Sir Keir's speeches, all of them presented with an inimitable and dramatic flourish?

I can't wait.

Burlington Bertie from Bow said...

Starmer quotes to include ' Diane Abbot must go for stating the bleedin' obvious' and 'Any mention of Jewish people in a discussionof racism is de facto antisemitic and ipso facto grounds for suspension in line with the Labour party's rules and procedures'.

Not forgetting his latest:
'Obviously, any mention of the situation in G*z* would be considered not just antisemitic but also prima facie evidence of support for Palestine Action, consequently an offence under the Terrorism Act 2000 and liable to imprisonment for up to 14 years'.

A bit like a fate worse than a fate worse than death eh? As for a centrist 'guided tour', the sad bastards would love one. Apparently, it's not Starmer and co's fault they're polling so badly, no its the evil left 'splitting the vote'. I'm beginning to wonder if the far right, far left, and centrists are all products of some hideous fever dream brought to life...

British Quisling "Labour" outright overt fascism intensifies.

The re-suspension of Diane Abbott proves yet again - as if it was needed - that the Starmer Quisling and his "supporters" are an organised collection of time serving cowardly racist shithouses. Brown Shirts replaced with mufti. Overt outright fascism in another guise.

Starmer's brief tenancy marks the looming end of that party. After the Starmer Quisling treachery nobody with a functioning brain will believe anything spewing from its propaganda poison.

And good riddance to it and its hangers-on. They are even worse than tories.

Anonymous said...

Meanwhile, ranting rightie "journalist" Robert Peston is outraged that Diane Abbott's skin colour is more easily identified than his Jewishness.

Looks like Quisling racist propaganda is revving up again.

Burlington Bertie from Bow said...

I always knew you couldn't wait for the return of the golden days of Cameron/May/Johnson/Truss, and the other bloke, Tankie. You were always heavily invested in the failure of this aimless and unprincipled Labour party and a return to power of the party that are completely happy in their bastardy, like the Nazi party were in contrast to those muesli-eating, milquetoast German Social Democrats in the 30s. More like Social Fascists, eh, just like the party line instructed you.

But as an active participant in a 21st century 'parliamentary democracy', you've now got a bit of a dilemma. The big question: is it to be the Lib Dems or the Greens? Carla and Adrian or Ed Davey? Who is to save us from this overt-outright-sideways- down Yardbirds- revival fascism you've so enthusiatically embraced?

Cometh the hour, cometh the Lev Davidovich, Tankie. What is your roadmap? Tell us your vision!

No evasions now, What Is To Be Done?

There is a runaway favourite in the Green Leadership race Bertie, he seems to have more principles than any you mentioned.

I find it quite grating people downplaying what is happening now. I've lost count of the patients I've had lately who have made specific actions due to the attacks on trans rights.

Not all of them made it.

So you keep downplaying it, a lot are going through a hell many would barely recognise.

Burlington Bertie from Bow said...

That's cheap, Ed.
My taking the piss out of Tankie is based on his nihilistic approach to absolutely everything and his juvenile and laughably lurid mode of expression.
And whatever has happened to trans rights in the last year, however badly it has affected some of your patients, might be unfeeling, might be insensitive, might have calamitous consequences, but is unconvincing as evidence that we are living under 'fascism', whether outright or overt or both.

That's not 'downplaying', that's just reality. This government is appalling: insensitive, unimaginative, in thrall to its donors, unprincipled, directionless, genocide-supporting, cruel, unimaginative, vindictive etc etc etc.
But to call it fascist is juvenile political illiteracy.

Anonymous said...

@16.55, you didn't, as usual, answer the question. Endlessly pointing out the bleeding obvious is not 'offering solutions'

Ed, as our Courts and tribunals keep handing out verdicts that suit the politicians, but make peoples lives a misery, expect nothing different.

Plainly the "Labour" Party requires "re-branding". New visual indicators are needed.

Der Hakenkreuz is out of the question. Too obvious and notorious.

Something must show even more compliance with fascist paymaster conditions.

A lapel white feather and yellow plastic stripe on the back for instance. At conference, a rousing rendition of "Dixie", just to let the likes of Diane Abbott remember who's in charge now.

A New New Labour for a New Britain. Slogan "Tomorrow Belongs To Us".

Assuming we're talking about Tankie Anonymous, Ed, I think your suspicion tells us more about you and your generosity of spirit than it does about him.
My impression is that he rarely if ever lifts his head from keyboard and screen long enough to be able to fight for anything.

And his unrelenting hatred for everyone and everything he sees in the present world comes across much clearer than any great love he may have for those who might benefit from a better one.

Of course, I could well be wrong.............

I think he's a good person driven slightly mad by the world. But I find it easier to believe someone railing against bad people has actually done something to try and stop it.

Because Starmer may have been born monstrous, he may have been made monstrous, but this is irrelevance. He is now a monster.
