Piers Morgan, Mental Health, And Race

Women of colour who make significant amounts of money, mental health issues, and the presence of former Screws and Daily Mirror editor Piers Morgan passing severely adverse criticism on them, apparently without pausing to engage brain first: it happened with Jameela Jamil, it is still happening with the Duchess of Sussex, and now it is happening with tennis star (and four-time Grand Slam singles winner) Naomi Osaka.

And what's more, Ron ...

Ms Osaka had decided she was going to give the media round a miss during the French Open. As the BBC has reported, “she would not do news conferences at Roland Garros to protect her mental health”. Morgan wasn’t having that, taking to Mail Online to sneerNarcissistic Naomi's cynical exploitation of mental health to silence the media is right from the Meghan and Harry playbook of wanting their press cake and eating it”.

Piers who?

Here, he told that Ms Osaka “is a brilliant tennis player. The big-serving Japanese star is the first Asian woman to become No1 in the world rankings and has won four Grand Slam singles titles”. But, and this is a big but, “Ms Osaka is also an arrogant spoiled brat whose fame and fortune appears to have inflated her ego to gigantic proportions … How else to explain her extraordinary decision to announce she will no longer participate in media press conferences, supposedly to protect her mental health?” There was more.

Piers who?

Petulant Osaka was fined $15,000 for refusing to appear in front of the media during the current French Open … given that she earns around $6,000 an hour, Osaka will recoup this fine while she sleeps tonight, rendering the fine utterly meaningless … What's not meaningless is her frankly contemptible attempt to avoid legitimate media scrutiny by weaponizing mental health to justify her boycott”. Et Cetera. Et Cetera. Et Cetera.

Piers who?

But then, very soon after Morgan’s rantfest had gone live, Ms Osaka withdrew from the French Open. “She had ‘suffered long bouts of depression’ since winning her first Grand Slam title in 2018”. She added “I am not a natural public speaker and get huge waves of anxiety before I speak to the world's media”. So now she’s taking some time out.

Having seen the reality of the situation, what would a sensible person have done? What would Nietzsche have done? “Pulled the Mail Online column and said sorry” might have been the sensible response. Not Morgan. The column stayed up and he doubled down. Mental health behind her withdrawal? “No, she’s withdrawn because of the backlash to her attack on the tennis media for doing their job”. She’s in a dark place, Moron.

But by now, he was on to sneering dismissively: “This criticism is damaging to my mental health. Delete”. And sneering at the W-Word: “Are high-profile women of colour exempt from criticism regardless of their conduct? Sorry, I must have missed that woke memo!

Double standards, much? This is the same person sneering at someone for not taking criticism, when he flounced off the set when someone criticised him? And the someone was a person of colour who has had to endure a torrent of racist abuse as a result, not helped when he told the Murdoch Sun that if he was able to pick his Breakfast TV “dream team”, then “a certain weatherman definitely wouldn’t be around”.

With Piers Morgan, it keeps on coming up people who are not white getting it in the neck where mental health issues are raised. That’s a most unfortunate coincidence.

  1. It would be impossible within the parameters of all the known laws of the universe to overstate just how much of a frontbottom Morgan is.

  3. Good on yer, Naomi girl.

Few more beautiful sights than corporate media apologists being fucked off.

Guaranteed to get dickheads like Moron vanishing up their own arses.

Corporate media have earned nothing more than the widespread contempt they get. Which is why their days are numbered.

  4. One of the good things about Morgan et al. hounding wealthy celebrities is that such people can afford very good lawyers and go after the little shit.

Unfortunately that isn't true for the ordinary people who suffer and are laughed at as 'benefit scroungers', 'snowflakes' and 'malingerers'.

The press give zero fucks about them. They're just a group who can be mocked for easy clicks and sassy headlines.

  5. Very good piece from Jonathan Liew: www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2021/may/31/were-not-the-good-guys-osaka-shows-up-problems-of-press-conferences

Pins it here: Athletes now have their own direct line to the public, and spoiler: it’s not us. Hard as it is to believe, Osaka’s function as an entertainer and corporate billboard is contingent on her playing tennis at an appointed hour, rather than being forced to sit in a windowless room explaining herself to a roomful of middle-aged men.

  6. Naomi Osaka is a great champion and accomplished athlete.

Morgammon is an untalented fat old man. There's less to him than meets the eye.

  8. I loath Piers Morgan and find him to be an arrogant, pompous vile idiot but this is just a load of nonsense and so is the accusation that he exclusively has a go at women of colour.

He has a go at people in the public eye of all races. He's attacked and had spats with white celebrities many times.

Call him out for being a vile, arrogant moron for sure but to imply race or gender plays a part in rubbish.

  9. Interesting piece on the subject in yesterday’s Grauniad: https://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2021/may/31/were-not-the-good-guys-osaka-shows-up-problems-of-press-conferences. Natch Piers “Morgan” Moron, the colossal bellend, is unlikely to have read it and even less likely to understand it.

  10. Sir Alex Ferguson often stuck 2 fingers upto the Corporate media. Moron and his pals hardly whimpered.

Naomi has every right as a human being not to give media interviews to white middle aged men. I just appreciate her tennis and standing up for mental health.

  11. And the Graun's Marina Hyde is on the colossal bellend's case too: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/jun/01/sport-athletes-mental-health-tennis-naomi-osaka

“[…]frothing anger from all the usual suspects, including the only highly paid news anchor in history so fragile that he recently stormed off air on his own show”

She does have a choice turn of phrase when sticking the boot into self-entitled pond life like Piers “Morgan” Moron, does Ms Hyde.

The press give zero fucks about them and so do the celebrity airheads who are wringing their hands and crying over Piers making mean comments about pampered Royals. They probably wouldn't even give money to the homeless.

Wow, that's a lot of baseless assumptions about people you don't know. Do you know who you sound like? Piers Morgan.
    Full of crap.
