Don’t Mention The War, Sorry, Brexit

Perhaps the most surreal aspect of the General Election campaign is that the party most likely to form the next Government - Labour - is steadfastly refusing to recognise the elephant in the Economy room. The Elephant which has resulted in higher taxes, a decline in the UK’s ability to trade freely with its nearest neighbour, and therefore its attractiveness and competitiveness.

The name of the Elephant is Brexit. And Labour would rather not mention it, so frit are they of the fury that would rain down upon them from the general direction of our free and fearless press should they dare to Go There. This level of cowardice before gaining power gives every impression of enduring after Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves take up residence in Downing Street.

But at some time, Labour will have to talk about the Elephant. Meanwhile, the Lib Dems are unencumbered by Labour’s cowardice, and John Sweeney, who is now fighting Sutton Coldfield for them, has put it directly: “I remember listening to the Brexit result in my little backyard and then it started to drizzle. Our wonderful country was conned something rotten: we have ended up with a broken economy, a blighted future and our national security endangered”.

And his solution? “The sooner we are back in the European Union the better and, if elected, I shall campaign for that … Vote for me and I shall fight for you”. Fight is the right word. Because the overmonied and intolerant part of the media class, less affected by Brexit, will fight to keep it.

They will always be able to summon a member of the punditerati to tell whoever reads the final article that the UK imposing economic sanctions upon itself is a small price to pay for the benefit of keeping all those FORRINS from making decisions that affect Brits. Screwing over farmers? Throwing the fishing industry under the nearest bus? Not their problem.

While the comfortable part of the media class can still dine at their reassuringly upmarket restaurants, can still summon tradespeople to patch up their over-valued properties, can still get domestic help without breaking the upmarket bank, and can still use the app to hail a private hire vehicle and therefore keep the hoi polloi away from them, Brexit will be excellent.

Typical of that media class is one Iain Martin, who claimed‘The Office for Budget Responsibility says UK GDP will be around 4% lower every year than it would have been had we remained inside the EU,’ reports the [Observer]. This is not what the OBR says”, only to be Community Noted and for Jonathan Portes to tell him “This is *precisely* what the OBR says”.

In the meantime, Edwin Hayward, who has written a little on the subject, has put together a thread (HERE) where he groups the benefits of EU membership under the headings of Economic Benefits, Freedom of Movement, Education and Research, Consumer Rights and Protections, Health and Safety, Workers’ Rights, Environmental Protection, Citizenship and Legal Rights, Data and Digital Rights, Cultural and Creative Industries, Trade and Business, Security, Political Influence, and Future Potential.

Put yet more directly, improving the lot of all those Ordinary and Hard Working People without sinking yet deeper into decline and a vicious cycle of higher taxation, and without Sterling losing all remaining credibility, is going to be, er, challenging without returning to the EU. With or without another poll.

It will also involve not giving con men like Nigel “Thirsty” Farage and his ability to talk well, but lie badly, equal status with leaders of democratically constituted political parties (which Reform UK, being a limited company with no internal democracy, cannot claim to be). Treat him on merit. Or lack of it.

But above all, Labour has to have the courage to talk about the EU. To be straight with the voters. This may well risk the bad faith lobbyists who lied and conned their way to success last time to crawl out of the Tufton Street woodwork. So what? They will have to be faced down whatever happens.

The average Polish citizen will soon be better off than their British counterpart. John Sweeney is right. The UK has to rejoin. That is all.

  1. Last week Rachel Reeves said there would be no return as her constituents of Leeds West voted leave. A few observations.

    1) Her constituency no longer exists, she is fighting in a new one, if the new constuency voted remain she will have to change her mind.

    2) The city of Leeds voted remain.

    3) She will be Chancellor so assume she sees her job of making us even poorer.

  2. Interesting to see how the feebleness of Starmer as Labour leader on the Brexit issue is almost a mirror image of the feebleness of Corbyn as Labour leader on the Brexit issue.

    Unity at Last!

  3. I wish it was as simple as "rejoin". But it isn't.

The original admirable concept of a European Economic Community (a common market) was long ago ditched in favour the current European Union model. Sadly, many of the criticisms are justified. Hence growing dissatisfaction across the Continent, now seized on by far right nationalists.

The situation isn't helped by bureaucrats like von der Leyen from a nazi family, nor is pan-Europeanism helped by fanatics like Stoltenberg at NATO. Much more of their nonsense and the concept of a united open Europe will end up in the dustbin of history.

Moreover, which commonsensical European would want to be associated with a Britain hellbent on slow suicide.

    1. We didn't leave on the basis that the EU was too willing to compromise, it was the argued that it wasn't. It's a fallacy to think of the EU as 'merely' an economic union in its early days, it's always been involved in social, education and welfare policy formation. The reason we introduced equal opps laws in the 70's was to fall in line with the EU. Indeed had it not been for the EU New Labour would have had bugger all to show for 13 year of govt...

    2. True enough. It was always "a common market of ideas". Which is why some social democratic policies (Objective One funding for example) survived Friedman/Thatcherite insanity. Until Brexit and the advancement of creeping right wing economics.

    3. Ever closer union was written into the Treaty of Rome right at the beginning. And at the time of the first referendum, the self styled "Federalists" reminded us all of that fact, and what they meant by it.
We voted to remain by almost 2:1.

    4. Friedman/Thatcher insanity is right. Truss tried an even purer form of their madness - and instantly tanked the economy. Neoliberalism or nu feudalism as it really is, simply transfers wealth from poor to rich. It's no surprise that its preached like a religion (and the religious right fully embraces it) in the USA where any criticism of rampant capitalism is seen as blasphemy. Mind you it was the UK govt that banned criticism of capitalism in our schools...

  4. The Labour party cannot commit to rejoining the EU, or even talk about it. The 'blue labour' mob won't have any of that. Glasmen and his disciple Embery, despite being fringe loons, have a massively disproportionate level of influence on what passes for nu Labour thinking. Want to win back the so called 'red wall' seats? Then don't mention the wa.. sorry, Brexit. Mustn't offend those Muslim hating, nu Labour voters!

  5. The flush-faced tory loon Montgomerie has just been on BBC "News" - "Good to have you on Tim" - making a near unchallenged free tory puff piece.

Mind you, he was "interviewed" by the same puppet who burst into tears when "reporting" the last croak of Phil The Greek.

  6. I have a lot of respect for Sweeney - seen many of his reports on television - a true commentator and journalist. Even if I didnt agree with him, I would agree with him on this

Brexit was a russian influence operation against the UK, and it is still is

We still have their fifth column in our midst (the traitors from left AND right) claiming Russia was provoked into invading Ukraine, the EU is out to undermine our way of life, aka singing the same sad old tunes whilst martyred on the cross of their self-imposed, self-righteous victimhood. The so-called patriots who take roubles in the 21st century and who would have taken Reichsmarks and Krugerands in the 20th century - yes, isnt it funny that these patriots are ever so touchy about their contacts with Russia - what do they have to hide? The answer is probably a lot

PS I saw NF last week in the North West - I never knew he was such a short-arse

  8. Tim 'the death of Conservatism' Montgomerie? A man who's predicted the Torys collapse more often than a cuckoo clock? I wish I'd seen that. It would have made for interesting watching as he tried to defend, nay, as it's the supine, subservient BBC promote the very thing he himself has done so much to run down..

  10. Like I said at 0910 on 24 June ...

    very touchy - https://www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/jun/24/nigel-farage-attacks-mail-newspapers-over-putin-ally-reports

When you're on the right and got the Daily Heil attacking you about your "patriotism" you know you're in trouble

And NF is instructing lawyers about a breach of the editor's code - well, i wonder what will happen given that NF is quite close to Russia and used to appear on Russia Today (and guess what, little NF is quite touchy about this as well, especially regarding monies received - https://www.cityam.com/nigel-farage-hits-back-at-claims-he-accepted-550000-from-the-russian-state-nonsense/)

    2. I wouldn't place too much faith in the increasingly politicised CofA. It's not quite US Supreme Court level of corruption and blatant disregard for law against socio-political views but in recent years decisions have repeatedly been called out by legal experts for being 'leant on' ones.

  12. Well, according to the not all biased and in no way trying to frighten Tory voters into returning to the fold, BBC, the frog faced lie machine is doing very well, thank you very much. Their 'carefully selected' set of polls show Labour and the Tory's losing ground to - ReformUK. Proving once and for all that there are indeed a lot of people in the UK with IQs that start with a decimal point...
