For those in the media establishment who have made a career out of being the one who sits in judgment on others, even people unable to defend themselves against those in possession of the larger megaphone, it all looks so different when the boot is so firmly on the other foot. So it was in a particularly ill-tempered edition of ITV breakfast offering
Good Morning Britain today, for former
Screws and
Daily Mirror editor Piers Morgan.
And what's more, Ron
Right from the 0630 hours start, the
atmosphere on set was bad: perhaps those forced to share the
GMB stage with Morgan knew that he would be going off on one as part of his obsession with the Duchess of Sussex. Maybe they saw his appearance yesterday on Fox News Channel (fair and balanced
my arse) when he made an untrue and particularly unpleasant claim about Megs. Was he going to carry on in the same vein?
Morgan opened with an unnecessary slice of rank misogyny, singling out Charlotte Hawkins because her dress had a hemline above the knee. It wasn’t quite as toe-curling as Norman Vaughan leering at Anne Aston on an edition of 1970s game show
The Golden Shot (ask an older relative), but it was bad. Then Morgan
was clearly reluctant to throw to fellow presenter Alex Beresford. We did not have to wait long to find out why.
Once Beresford had the floor, he talked Haz and Megs,
and called out Morgan. “
They have had an overwhelming amount of negative press … There was bad press around the engagement, before the engagement and everything that has followed since has been incredibly damaging, quite clearly to Meghan’s mental health”. There was more.
“
I hear Piers say that William has gone through the same thing, but … siblings experience tragedy in their life … one will be absolutely fine and brush it off, and the other will not be able to deal with it so strongly, and that is clearly what has happened with Prince Harry”.
And more. “
He walked behind his mother’s coffin, at a tender, tender age in front of … the globe. That is going to shape a young boy for the rest of his life. So I think that we all need to take a step back. I understand that you [Morgan] don’t like Meghan Markle, you’ve made it so clear a number of times on this programme, a number of times, and I understand that you’ve got a personal relationship with Meghan”. He wasn’t finished.
“
Or had one, and she cut you off. She’s entitled to cut you off if she wants to. Has she said anything about you since she cut you off? I don’t think she has, but you continue to trash her”. At this point Morgan blew a gasket and stormed off the set. Beresford continued “
Absolutely diabolical behaviour … I’m sorry, but Piers spouts off on a regular basis and we all have to sit there and listen. 0630 to 0700 yesterday was incredibly hard to watch”.
Morgan returned and whined at Beresford. But perhaps he should also be paying attention to mental health charity Mind, which put out this press release via Twitter: “
We were disappointed and concerned to see Piers Morgan’s comments on not believing Meghan’s experiences about suicidal thoughts today … we are in conversations with ITV about this at the moment”. Having to say sorry on air, perhaps? That’s really going to hurt.
ITV are having to make an awful lot of allowances for their star host right now, even to the point of offending their sponsors. Is it really worth it just to keep the press off their backs? Or is Morgan about to jump ship?
Either way, today was not GMB’s finest hour.

We only have to see what an arse Moron Morgan always was when we look at his appearance on HIGNFY over 20 years ago. Attempting to get the better of Ian Hislop, Angus Deaton and Clive Anderson clearly failed which led to him making snide threats towards them on air.
ReplyDeleteIndeed, this led to a personal spat between Moron and Hislop when as editor of the Mirror, he claimed to have dirt on Hislop. This led to sending a pack of Mirror journalists to Hislop's home village and in an attempt to get salacious stories about him and his family. Thankfully, his neighbours gave these Mirror journalists short shrift.
In 20 or so years, Moron has sadly not changed and has arguably gotten even worse.
Moron just cancelled himself.
ReplyDeleteOh my aching sides.
Gosh. Wonder if it was an attempt to further distract from how the media treat the couple? The 25 page special in the Mail tomorrow can now focus on Moron flouncing off rather than having to justify sending paps over to chase 'Arry and co.
ReplyDeleteAnd how safe is Beresford - can the moron demand the guy is 'let go'or else he walks?
Stinks of the very worst of a viewers chase.....
ReplyDeleteMoron will do anything. He'd sell his arse to Hitler.
To Anon (9 March 13:11), Beresford is safe. The toxic twit Moron has indeed resigned. Attacking someone on air who claims her mental health was under pressure on a channel that has mental health as a core cause is clearly a dumb move. Either Moron walked or ITV was going to dump him.
ReplyDeleteHe's jumped ship.
ReplyDeleteAren't we lucky.
Wonder what he will bring his talented touch to, how he will bring light to the darkness, what he will screw up now.
What an absolute snowflake!
ReplyDeleteWatch him rock up on Gammon Broadcasting or its media equivalent.
ReplyDeleteNo fan of Piers Morgan the pub bore but this sycophantic fawning over very rich privileged people and treating them like victims coming from my fellow leftists is cringe worthy.
ReplyDelete@19:43.
DeleteAgreeing with someone isn't "sycophantic fawning."
Unless of course you're someone like, say, Alastair Campbell producing a lying document to help excuse an illegal war by mass murdering red tory war criminals Bliar/Brown. That sort of thing.
You know the fact that Meghan is able to induce career-obliterating rage in Morgan and send the Daily Mail over the edge makes me think she's a force for good in some small way.
ReplyDeleteCourse he'll be back, probably as a talking head on GB News telling us about how bad cancel culture is.
Oh well, in honour, here is one of his earlier pieces:

Good grief. I just ventured over to the Daily Mail website and they're portraying Morgan as a victim of cancel culture and almost every comment is of the 'I'm never watching GMB again!' type.
ReplyDeleteFor anyone who wants to check, the headline is the grammar-mangling: "Piers Morgan quits GMB: Cancel culture claims morning TV star in week he scored record ratings after social media campaign whips up 41,000 complaints to Ofcom because he said he didn't believe a word Meghan said"
They really are trying their hardest to create an alternate reality.
Morgan has now took his ball home permanently now, as OFCOM stepped in following 40k+ complaints..
ReplyDeleteMoron will no doubt rock up at GB News with Andrew Neil and the other rotten gammon crowd.
He's off to sulk with his best buddy Donald Trump
ReplyDeleteHe's GONE!!
ReplyDeleteMy guess is he's already lining up a position at Gammon Bastards News. That said, he'd never be happy being under Gammon Fart: Andrew "Fuckwit" O'Nelly. Those two would spend all their time scrating at each other and trying to out-do each other in the Alt-Reich Gammon Bastard stakes. They would end up making Niggle Fartarse look like Florence Nightingale in comparison.
ReplyDeleteI've always assumed that, as soon as Meghan became a royal, she was ordered to cut off contact with Piers Morgan in case she let anything embarrassing about the royals slip in casual conversation with him. Suppose she mentioned Prince Andrew, who is still a person of interest in the USA?
ReplyDeleteOut of time. And out of a job.
