After the awful news about Alan Henning, there had to be
punditry. And riding on the coat-tails of any Twitter exchange and looking to
profit from it is, as ever, (thankfully) former MP Louise Mensch, now
representing the distant constituency of Manhattan Upmarket, just to prove that
she is intellectually superior, and not because she has nothing better to do,
honestly.

Someone called Angus Curran had a swipe at Liberal Conspiracy creator Sunny Hundal.
Ms Mensch immediately jumped in and passed adverse comment. There was no need
to do so, and nobody invited her presence: she just did it to kick someone
whose views do not align with hers. Then she suggested he was denigrating the
death of Alan Henning.
Sunny pointed out the Tweet from him was way before the Henning
video was released, at after 2100 hours. Ms Mensch now quibbled erroneously
over timings. One frustrated Tweeter pointed out “seriously Louise? A man has his f***ing head cut off and you’re moaning
about Tweets?” He might as well not have bothered.
She just kept on wibbling: “so not only is [Angus Curran] bang on accurate about you, you are now
lying that he is smearing you”. Does anybody intercoursing well care? Angus
Curran clearly didn’t – he’d found something more useful to do (not difficult,
in the circumstances).
Sunny now made a mistake – he showed mild exasperation at
the sustained idiocy emanating from Ms Mensch: “You have no idea what’s going on”. But she just kept going: “it is absolutely clear your 7:22pm Tweet
refers to a new video”. THERE WAS ANOTHER ISIS VIDEO APART FROM THE HENNING
ONE.
Hundal tried to point this out. Was she listening? Not
really: “and by the way, Angus never said
‘Henning’” she observed. THAT WAS BECAUSE IT WASN’T THE HENNING VIDEO THAT
HE WAS TALKING ABOUT, BUT SHE ASSUMED IT WAS. And she had a get-out: “How is any ISIS video not pure evil?”
By this time, another exasperated Tweeter tried to suggest
that she drop the bone: “this is such a
trivial dispute. I’m sure Sunny cares about IS doing horrible things”.
Quite. So did Ms Mensch listen? As if you need
to ask: she was on wibble autopilot and off over the horizon, prattling
on to nobody as they had all lost interest.
Had this been some anonymous, run-of-the-mill troll, it
would attract little attention. But she was allowed to become a Member of
Parliament and sit on the Department of Culture, Media and Sport select
committee. And later given a newspaper column. Be worried about those who run
for elective office. Be very worried.
You've forgotten to include the comment Sunny Hundal made which Louise Mensch objected to. He asked: "Why do Isis always publish their videos on a Friday evening, while I'm trying to get off Twitter???"
ReplyDeleteAs you say, this was before the video showing the death of Alan Henning appeared and Sunny was clearly referring to previous videos released by "IS".
