Reality Of The Cuts

Spending cuts, previously only talked about, are now here, and starting to make their presence felt. One council that has shown just how difficult the situation has become is Blackburn with Darwen.

Yesterday, when most workers were returning to work from the late May Bank Holiday, the council’s offices remained closed, with staff taking an unpaid day off. This is the first of twelve such days over the next three years.

This will enable the authority to save an extra £1 million over that period, but more importantly save between 50 and 100 jobs. The unpaid days off will be tacked on to Bank Holiday weekends, with the next coming at the end of August.

That’s how bad it is already.
