Annie Gets Her Gun

The way that many on the right in the USA are moving to oppose democracy in Egypt has been demonstrated at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) by the increasingly scary Ann Coulter, author of such riveting tomes as “If Liberals Had Any Brains, They’d Be Conservatives”.

Coulter, who is all in favour of democracy in the USA, Europe, and even Iran, clearly does not believe that this particular US export should be shipped to Egypt. In her Q&A session at CPAC, she does not tell her audience that Egyptians are unworthy of such benefits, but her answers on the subject are unequivocal.

When asked why elections were desirable in Iran, but not in Egypt, Coulter answered “You don’t go around disturbing countries where you have a loyal ally”. So whatever Hosni Mubarak was up to is OK by Our Annie.

Moreover, when asked about journalists and dissidents that had been jailed in Egypt, Coulter replied “I think there should be more jailed journalists”, a remark that brought her thunderous applause.

So there you have it – democracy is fine, except where there are friendly despots, in which case the locals can go hang. It will surprise no-one that Coulter can be seen regularly on Fox News Channel (fair and balanced my arse).
